The transformation of the Marktkwartier in Amsterdam West has been under design since 2010. Neighbor Steven Driehuis started a petition in early 2021 against the plans for a large parking deck on one of the newly built commercial roofs, which he overlooks from his home. As a result, a Roof Plans Factory was organized for all parties involved in the development of Market Quarter West. This inspiration session was held to brainstorm together and without obligation about the opportunities and risks of involving the roofscape at Marktkwartier. Our approach here was that the use of roofs can also, or even precisely, have a positive impact on all stakeholders, including Food Center entrepreneurs.

As a result of the roof plan factory, we created this concept design. With this document, we hope to inspire, excite and enthuse to see the rooftop landscape as an opportunity. We show how roofs can add quality and beauty, how they play a role in our mental and physical health and why they matter as in future-oriented and climate-adaptive building solutions.
